Satellite Ballet : Per Oberon's Grove Write-Up Monday April 18, 2011 - Troy Schumacher of New York City Ballet is the founding choreographer of Satellite Ballet, an ensemble of NYCB dancers founded in 2010 by Schumacher and producer Kevin Draper as a collaborative arts workshop based out of Lake Michigan, New York and Portland, Oregon. Satellite Ballet is a creative company rooted in designing collaborations between digital artists, dancers, musicians, photographers and writers. Their current project is to create an evening of three works - two ballets and one staged vocal work - set for final workshop in the summer of 2011 and then to be premiered in New York City this Autumn. Starting with a commission by the Satellite Gallery in conjunction with the Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts in Fremont, Michigan, Schumacher and his dancers presented PROGRESS at the Center during the summer of 2010. Tonight at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Troy invited a small group of dance and arts devotees for a private showing; earlier in the day there was a run-thru which I watched and my friend Brian Krontz photographed. Five dancers took part in the studio performance: Teresa Reichlen, Ashley Laracey, Justin Peck, Daniel Applebaum and Sam Greenberg. Two other ballerinas are part of Satellite Ballet: Lauren King and Marika Anderson. A contingent of NYCB dancers came out to support their colleagues this evening: Sterling Hyltin, Gwyneth Muller, Sean Suozzi, Ralph Ippolito and Cameron Dieck. It was great chatting with these dancers before the presentation; they are really busy now preparing for the NYCB Spring season which begins on May 3rd. Delicious hors d'ouevres and wine were served and then the dancing began. We were shown two excerpts from PROGRESS: a pas de deux for Ashley Laracey and Justin Peck, and a solo for Daniel Applebaum. Then Ashley performed a solo (in silence) and Tess Reichlen and Sam Greenberg a duet from the work-in-progress entitled EPISTASIS. Composers Nick Jaina (piano) and Nathan Langston (violin) performed their scores live for the dancers, giving an added immediacy to tonight's showing. The music is melodious yet thoroughly contemporary; the theme of the PROGRESS pas de deux is particularly appealing. Troy's choreography is vibrant in its clarity and use of space; the dancers - all familiar from their work at NYCB - looked superb and the entire presentation felt fresh and exciting.

Columbia Ballet Collaborative : Columbia Ballet Collaborative (CBC) proudly presents a dynamic program of all new contemporary ballets at Miller Theatre. CBC, founded in 2007 by five professional ballet dancers enrolled at Columbia, is comprised of students from all four of the University's undergraduate colleges and various graduate schools. The program features new works by Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, first prize winner and Ursula Moreton Award recipient at the Royal Ballet Choreographic Competition, and Emery LeCrone, CBC's resident choreographer, who has choreographed for such companies as North Carolina Dance Theatre and Oregon Ballet Theatre. The program features a piece by Daniel Catanach, Artistic Director of Urban Ballet Theater and Director of the Performing Arts Training Program at Abrons Arts Center, Henry Street Settlement. Additionally, Columbia University student and former American Ballet Theatre (ABT) dancer, Melissa Thomas, makes her choreographic debut, featuring current ABT dancer, Grant DeLong.

Nadine Revene : Nadine Revene started her extensive career at fourteen in Call Me Madam on Broadway with Ethel Merman. Soon after, she was invited to join New York City Opera as a soloist, followed by American Ballet Theater dancing principal solo roles in ballets by Anthony Tudor, Kenneth McMillan, Agnes de Mille and Jerome Robbins. She has also performed in Music Man on Broadway with Robert Preston and Barbara Cook and danced with New York City Ballet for five years. She was a principal dancer, assistant ballet mistress and coach at Pennsylvania Ballet Company. After dancing as a prima ballerina with Staatsoper Bremen in Germany, she became a charter member of the First Chamber Dance Quartet, formed by four members of New York City Ballet to perform original choreography to great chamber works with original costumes, sets and lighting design. In 1976, she opened her own school, Studio Revene in Manhattan where she created an atmosphere of professional standards with a strong musical orientation. Her students have gone on to join such companies as Paul Taylor, ABT, Lar Lubovitch and Alvin Ailey. She has had a full-time teaching schedule of advanced, intermediate, advanced beginner and pointe classes at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Ballet Arts, Dance Space Center and Peridance. But more importantly, Nadine is a wonderful woman, Hope's mentor and a true friend.

Eryc Taylor : Eryc Taylor, Artistic Director of Eryc Taylor Dance in New York City , is a native of Los Angeles, CA. He received his BFA in Dance from University of the Arts/Philadelphia and went on to receive his MFA in Dance from New York University's, Tisch School of the Arts. He has studied abroad at London Contemporary School of Dance and in Paris at the Centre de Danse du Marais and has been awarded several major scholarships which include a residency at Jacob’s Pillow. He spent two years with the Cunningham Dance Foundation Repertory Understudy Group. Taylor has performed works by Merce Cunningham, Mark Dendy, Group Motion, Paul Taylor, Milton Meyers, Sean Curran, and Gus Solomons Jr. and has collaborated with notable artists including Germaul Barnes, Laura Peterson, and Ying-Ying Shiau. His choreography, has been presented worldwide including extensive presentations of his choreography throughout Germany. Taylor is also known for producing sight specific dance theater installations which have graced the shores of Key West, Florida. He has produced two summer dance festivals in Martha’s Vineyard called, "Dance Martha Dance!." His work has also appeared at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Joyce Soho, The Second Avenue Dance Theater, NYU, Dance New Amsterdam’s APAP festival and Joe's Pub at The Public Theater, NYC. Taylor looks forward to a successful upcoming season of his dance company, where he continues to explore new and innovative ways to dance on pointe.
